Excursions

There are two excursions directly associated with the conference.

The first is a half-day trip to Puruchuco which is included as part of the conference fee.

The second is a a two-day trip up the north coast, including a visit to the thirteen towers of Chankillo. This will take place after the main conference and is optional.

Half-day excursion

On Friday Jan 7 there will be a archaeological tour of Puruchuco. This Inca ceremonial site, located in the Rimac valley to the east of Lima, achieved fame in 2002 after mummy bundles containing more than two thousand bodies were excavated from a nearby Inca cemetery. The site museum contains artefacts excavated at the site such as ceramics and textiles. Also on display in the museum are several khipu found at the site in 1956 and a highlight of our visit will be an elucidation of these by Gary Urton.

Two-day excursion

On Monday January 10 and Tuesday January 11 there will be a two-day trip to sites in the Casma area, including the now-famous Chankillo, whose thirteen towers have been hailed as a solar “observatory”.
